TRM Telemetry System

TRM telemetry system with rat on smartpad

The TRM telemetry system is the new standard in wireless, implantable telemetry technology to measure high-fidelity physiological signals in small animal models (> 200 grams), including high-fidelity pressure, sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), biopotentials (i.e., ECG, EMG, EEG) and tissue oxygen.

The small animal telemetry system offers researchers the ability to improve data quality in basic cardiovascular research, safety pharmacology studies and toxicology studies. Data can be recorded for longer periods of time and in conditions unhindered by anesthesia or restraint. Additional benefits include reduced handling induced stress artifact and lab maintenance.

The complete system requires the Telemeter, Configurator and SmartPad. Millar also recommends using ADInstruments PowerLab and Lab Chart Data Acquisition Hardware and Software for complete data analysis.

Telemetry System Benefits

  • Replaces wires
  • Enables long term recordings
  • Enables monitoring in natural environments
  • Reduces handling induced stress artifact
  • Provides ability to use animals sequentially as their own controls or in multiple studies
  • Provides round the clock measurements without lab personnel present
  • Reduces the number of animals required
  • Reduces animal maintenance costs

Advanced Telemetry Technology

Digital data transmission and wireless inductive power charging enable lifetime, 24/7 digital data from implanted telemeters in free-roaming conscious animals.

Traditional Telemetry vs. Telemetry Research

Traditional Telemetry

Telemetry Research

Signals Low fidelity pressure, temperature, activity,
low frequency biopotential
High-fidelity pressure, temperature, SNA,
low and high frequency biopotential, tissue oxygen
Sampling Frequency 250 to 500 Hz Up to 8000 Hz
Transmission All transmitters send data on a single frequency Digital transmission offers multiple
transmission bands
Animal size Mice, rats and larger Rats (>200 g) and larger
Recording range Up to 1 m Up to 5 m
Monitor duration Limited by battery life Unlimited - recharge in vivo
Continuous data Limited by battery life True 24/7
Schedule data Manual via magnet switch Remote switch at receiver or via software
Refurbishment Need to monitor battery state,
refurbish when low
No refurbishment waiting or cost,
just recharge and continue
Co-housing/co-implants Limited low frequency data from two animals High frequency data from multiple animals
Output format Proprietary interface Standard analog voltage
